ANDROID APP PRIVACY POLICY

Your diary.
Your choice to share.

NoiseNote is an independent noise diary. Your notes and recordings can contain sensitive information about you and other people. This policy explains how the rebuilt Android app handles that information.

Updated 22 October 2026 · Privacy contact: NoiseNote support

Which version this covers

This policy covers the rebuilt NoiseNote Android app, currently in testing. It also explains advertising and purchase features being prepared for a future release; those features are clearly identified below and are not active in the current development build.

The version currently available on Google Play may differ. Its existing policy remains available at the previous app policy while that release is reviewed. We will update this page and the store disclosures before releasing changes that affect data handling.

Information you put in your diary

You may save case names, incident dates and times, categories, descriptions, impact notes, suspected sources, locations you describe, report contact details and case references. Recordings may capture voices and other identifying sounds. Imported older records can include photographs and their existing metadata.

These records, settings, audio files and local recovery copies are stored on your device. The rebuilt app does not send diary content to a NoiseNote server, council, advertising provider or analytics service. It does not require a NoiseNote account or provide a developer-operated cloud backup service.

Microphone and device access

The app requests microphone permission for audio monitoring and recording. You can refuse or revoke permission through Android settings; recording and monitoring then cannot work. Information you type about a location is separate from GPS: the current rebuilt app does not request device location permission.

When you choose to save or share evidence, Android provides a destination or sharing chooser. The app grants access to the selected exported files for that action. It does not need access to all of your documents to save a report.

Exports and sharing

You decide whether to export a PDF, an evidence bundle or individual files, and where to save or send them. Exports may include the contact details, notes, recordings, images and case information you select. Review them before sharing, particularly where other people can be identified.

Your chosen recipient, email provider, messaging app or storage service then handles the copy under its own practices. Choosing a cloud destination can upload that copy through the service you selected. Deleting an incident in NoiseNote does not delete copies already exported, shared or held by a recipient.

Storage, retention and removal

Diary information remains on your device until you delete it, clear app storage or uninstall the app. Temporary exports, drafts and migration recovery copies can exist separately from the live diary. Removing a diary entry does not necessarily remove every recovery or exported copy.

The current rebuilt app disables Android automatic app backup. A locally saved report or evidence ZIP is not a complete restorable backup. Keep important copies somewhere you control; losing the device or clearing app storage can lose evidence. This website cannot retrieve a private diary from your phone.

Advertising and consent: planned release features

The current rebuilt development app includes Google’s User Messaging Platform (UMP) for a user-initiated privacy setup check in Settings. Choosing that check contacts Google’s consent service using the app identifier and device/network information needed to retrieve and record privacy choices. No diary notes, recordings or photographs are supplied to that check. The development app also includes Google Mobile Ads SDK 25.4.0 for an optional, clearly labelled Google test-banner preview in Settings. The preview can be requested only after the privacy check allows ad requests; production ads are disabled. Even test advertising can involve network requests, device identifiers and diagnostics handled by Google as described below. Creating a consent message in AdMob does not activate advertisements in the app.

In a version that integrates Google Mobile Ads, Google’s SDK can collect and share device and account identifiers, IP addresses, interaction information and diagnostics for advertising, measurement and fraud prevention. An IP address may indicate approximate location. The precise data depends on the SDK version, settings and available consent; our diary notes, audio and photographs are not intended inputs to advertising.

The planned consent flow will offer consent, refusal and more detailed choices where required, with a way to revisit privacy choices in the app. Refusing personalised advertising must not prevent recording or saving diary evidence. We will verify the actual SDK configuration and available privacy controls before release.

See Google Mobile Ads data disclosures, Google’s privacy policy and how Google uses information from partner apps. Advertising providers apply their own retention practices; clearing NoiseNote storage does not itself delete information they already hold.

Purchases: planned release feature

A paid upgrade and Google Play Billing integration are being considered and are not active in the current rebuilt test app. If offered, Google Play will process payment details. NoiseNote will need purchase status and purchase identifiers to check and restore the upgrade; it does not need your card number. We will describe the implemented verification and retention arrangements here before enabling purchases.

Support and privacy requests

If you email NoiseNote support, we receive your email address, message and any attachments through our email provider. We use them to respond, investigate the issue and handle your request. Please start with a description and avoid sending recordings, complaint reports or personal information about other people unless needed.

We keep support correspondence for as long as needed to handle the enquiry and any related follow-up or record-keeping obligation, then remove it when no longer needed. To ask about access, correction or deletion of information you sent to support, email NoiseNote support. We cannot access or delete private records on your phone remotely. Depending on your location, you may also have rights to object, restrict processing or complain to your local data-protection authority, including the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.

Children and other people’s privacy

NoiseNote is not designed specifically for children. Record and share responsibly: avoid unnecessary personal details, review identifiable voices and images, and follow the rules that apply where you live. The app does not automatically submit a complaint or guarantee that a recipient will accept evidence.

This website and policy changes

Reading this page uses Firebase Hosting; the website’s technical data handling is described in our website privacy notice. No recordings can be uploaded through this site. We will update the date above when this policy changes and provide further notice in the app where appropriate.
